How to make the summer a fun?

It is that time of the year when the sun is at its hottest best. Yes, summer is here. With global warming resulting in hot temperatures, going out in the hot summer sun is something that everyone just shies away from. Sitting indoors, however seems to be too boring an option. Here are a few things that we can do during the summer and beat the heat at the same time.

  • Start a herb garden: This is much easier than maintaining a normal garden and you don't need anything to start off except a pot ,a few herbal seeds and an area that gets both the sun and the shade. Once you have picked the perfect spot, decide on what herbs you will like to grow. Parsely, basil, orengano and rosemary are great options .
  • Throw a theme party : A great way to get all your friends together would be to throw a theme party. You could do a movie theme or a cartoon and have your friends come dressed up as different characters. Serve summer favorite drinks and snacks or finger food .
  • Make a scrap book : Make a scrap book for someone you love . It could include pictures , sketches, and ancedotes and just about anything related to that person. These make excellent , highly personalised birthday presents too and will be a creative way to spend hot, sunny afternoons.
  • Have a water balloon fight : Gather all your friends together, get some water, some balloons and have a water balloon fight . There is no better way to beat the heat and you will have a whale of a time .
  • Play board games :Remember Monopoly. Uno and scrabble ? No, not the ones on social networking sites , but the traditional ones played on the board . Indulge in an evening of board games and hot chocolate with friends and family and see how time flies.
  • Learn something new : You don't have to actually go any place to do this . You could take up a variety of courses online! So what are you waiting for ? Go ahead and learn a new language or how to play the guitar or even cook up a storm .
  • Become a bookworm : Read a book. Set a goal as to how many books you want to finish , in the summer , before you start reading.Better still would be to read books of a genre that you don't normally read -biographies, scifi, history .
  • Make snow slushies : There is nothing like beating the heat with cool drinks. Try out different combinations of your favorite cold drinks with crushed ice and some soda with a dash of lemon and viola ! You have a delicious summer drink to cool you off.

GOOD JOKES!!!!!!!

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: “My friend is dead! What can I do?”

The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: “Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard.

The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: “OK, now what?“ Add to Mixx!

  • Akshaya Tritiya ,is the day when Veda Vyaasa and Lord Ganesha started writing Mahabharata. The day, for this and a few other reasons, is believed to be a great day for investing. One only needs to visit a jewellery shop to witness the rush for jewelley in general and gold in particular. This brings us to an important question .Why invest in gold ?
  • Gold, from ancient times, has been used as money, for its versatility besides being rare. There are typically two main reasons for gold being touted as a good investment option- the profits it fetches as its price increases over a period of time and the fact that it helps withstand any economic, political and/ or social crisis .
  • Since gold derives its value from its demand and supply , the price of gold fluctuates with time. It is this that causes people to buy it when its value is low, and sell it when its price is high -similar to buying and selling of shares. Gold helps withstand economic crises to a great extent , as even if the value of money is greatly tarnished, gold continues to retain its value.
  • Gold has always been the best thing to invest in. Also recent trends heavily support investment in gold .Gold investors benefited by a 24% increase in its value last year . Gold's advantage lies in the face of inflation and /or the depreciation of the value of money .
  • These reasons make gold precious and prompted Thomas Fuller, a British writer, to say, "It is much better to have gold in your hand than in the heart ." We suggest, however, that you have both.

Timeless Beauty.

  • In South India, jewellery has an integral part of the temples since times immemorial. All these started with traders who returned with precious jewels. Only the kings of the time were in a position to spend on the costly jewellery. Because of their bhakti on deities they decorated temple deities with various forms of jewellery. The kings and queens also were fond of wearing various ornaments made of gold. For this purpose, the help of the asaris (artisans) were sought for and they became the members of the royal family.
  • Set in gold, and interspersed with precious gems of all kinds, these were fashioned into crowns, elaborate necklaces and other unique ornaments. For the royal women, jewels were fashioned to be worn from the head to the toes. Thus were unique pieces created such as the hair and head ornaments like the Jadainagar, Rakkodi, Thirugu Billai, all worn on the long plaited braid, the Thalai Saman for the top of the head, the Maatal, Thodu and Jhumki for the ears, the Addigai or the Choker around the neck, the Vanki for the arm, different types of pendants known as Padakkam, the more elaborate pendant known as Makarakandi, bangles, rings and so on. The most striking among the various ornaments for the neck is undoubtedly the large necklace which rests on the chest, known as the Maanga-Malai (garland of mangoes). The nature was the main source of inspiration for the jewel crafter. Like the lotus and the parrot, the mango became a recurring motif. When the British took this pattern to weave woollens in a small Scottish town named Paisely, the whole world labelled it the paisley pattern.
  • Why did these ornaments become famous as temple jewellery one might wonder. Well, as mentioned earlier, royals ordered them for themselves and their favorite deities. Kings and queens vanished from our lives long ago. But the jewels they gave to temples survived, atleast some of them did. We can see still some of these unique antique pieces during temple processions. Then how did dancers come to wear temple jewels, we may ask. In ancient times, temple dancers or Devadasis were a vital part of not only temple rituals but also court culture and royal celebrations. They wore all the elaborately studded ornaments to dance in front of the king. When the modern day Bharatamatyam dancer began to perform in sabhas, her guru instructed her on what ornaments to wear. But she had to make do with the copies which were more affordable.
  • As with many ancient crafts, jewellery making has survived against all odds in India, but not without many compromises in quality. The temple jewellery one buys now is very well crafted. Generations of craft men's families in places like Nagarkoil, Tirunelveli and other parts of TamilNadu continue making this type of jewellery. If provided with real precious gems and tonnes of gold, they can still make them fit for a royal purse. But they have survived only because they can make affordable "temple jewellery" for dancers and brides among whom it is popular, using gold plated silver and semi-precious rubies. They may not look very royal or be fit for the gods, but they can take the glare of the limelight and make a classical dancer loook pretty attractive.

The power of Gold.

  • Gold is mankind's highest valuable asset. Its luster makes it a favorite metal for crafting jewellery. Its high demand is due to its scarcity. It is estimated that all the gold mines throughout the world is only about 1,20,000MT, which can be transported by a single oil tanker. The value of this cargo would be around $1.5trillion.
  • Africa was home to ancient gold. The early mines were located in Ethiopia , from where the Egyptians obtained their supplies . It was gold that lured conquerors to the New World where the Incas referred to the precious metal as tears of the sun; it enticed traders to , India who came in quest of the legendary wealth of the region. In both these geographically distanced ancient cultures, gold served as an entry to omnipotence.
  • In India, gold was associated with power, wealth, religion and health. The metal was a symbol of the goddess Lakshmi and denoted prosperity. Gold plays an important role in each of the sacraments that mark a stage in an individual's journey through life, where it serves the purpose of protection against negative influences, attraction of good and deflection of evils. Gold welcomes a new-born into the world and transports the departed soul to the life hereafter.
  • According to Indian mythology, all creation ensued from Hiranyagarbha or the Golden Womb. Gold was equivalent to prana or the vital breath and therefore synonymous with life.Endowed with the properties of tejas or energy, varchas or brilliance and satyam or truth, the metal was regarded as exceeding all others in value, purity and finesse. It is infinite, indestructible and pure.It is because of this, that gold is particularly associated with Akshaya Tritiya throughout India.
  • Akshaya Tritiya is the day that falls on Tritiya or the third lunar day from Amavasya vaishakain the month of Vaishaka. On this day, the sun and the moon- the most important planets of the Hindu system-are at their brightest position that this day is considered one of the most sacred and auspicious days in the Hindu calender.
  • According to Indian mythology, Treta Yuga began this day ; and the Ganges river descended to he earth from heaven .The term Akshaya means that which never diminishes or that which is inexhaustible. Therefore, Akshaya Tritiya symbolises abundance , good fortune. It is considered the most auspicious day to bring Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth into one's home. Since yellow metal becomes the most favoured purchase on this day.

Human Cloning

  • Human cloning means replicating the DNA of an organism into a new organism, as a result of which a new organism has the same characteristics of the original organisms.
  • Human cloning will be carried out by the same method that brought forth Dolly, Reproductive Cloning. In Reproductive Cloning, the nucleus is removed from a body cell of the organism to be cloned and this nucleus is inserted into an enucleated egg, that is, an egg whose nucleus has previously been removed. The egg with the new nucleus is then treated to electric or chemical treatment to simulate cell division. The resulting embryo is transferred to a host uterus to develop properly and eventually be given birth to. The new-born organism will be a replica of the original organism, but not the exact same actually, since it will have DNA derived from both the organism as well as the egg.
  • The question may arise as to why at all human cloning is required as there is already population explosion .Cloning could help develop human organs that can be used for transplantation . The risk of rejection will be less as the cloned organ will have the same genetic code.Further , cloning would also help infertile couples to have their offspring .Cloning may also help to give birth to another Isac newton or Dr. Homebhaba.
  • The question arises as whether cloning is ethical or not. I am of the view that as far as we don't go beyond morality there is nothing wrong , if science can provide happiness to infertile couples to give birth to their own offsprings . Further, what is wrong if science can produce the replica of the great scientists whose knowledge and research will help the future world.
  • As far as legality is concerned , certain countries like the USA and the UK have treated human cloning as illegal .

Tune in to music to turn on to health

  • Consider these. Getting up in the morning to the chirping of birds, children sleeping when the mother sings lullaby, youngsters joging with iPods plugged to their ears and elders wandering in search of laughter clubs. All these surely anchor energy in our body and mind. Further, we can not forget that the world was created from the initial sound OM. So the body, mind and the world are connected by the power of sound. Of all kinds of sounds music has an instant effect on a person's mind.
  • Musical notes when vibrate at certain frequency effect the brain waves and the body also responds. The musical notes travel down the spinal cord to the autonomous nervous system which regulates the heart beat rate, blood pressure, muscular power and the body metabolism.
  • Various classical Indian music ragas are perfect for relieving stress and relaxing the body. Music soothes the soul. From times immemorial, people have listened to ragas to relieve mental stress. Raga Jaijaivati is suitable for an evening session while raga Darbari is best for an early morning exercise.

FROG LOAN

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack.

"Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday." Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it's okay, he knows the bank manager.

Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral. The frog says, "Sure. I have this," and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed. Very confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office.

She finds the manager and says, "There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral." She holds up the tiny pink elephant. "I mean, what in the world is this?"

(You're going to love this)

(A masterpiece)

(Wait for it)

The bank manager looks back at her and says..."It's a knickknack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man's a Rolling Stone."

Connect with yourself

Yoga, the ancient Indian school of exercises can establish harmony between your mind and your body.

Yoga a Sanskrit word means "connection". To the layman it means striking strange postures with closed eyes. However, the connection is of the body with the mind and of the mind with the soul. Let us now understand the effects of some yogic postures on some of the most vital organs of our body.

For the HEART:
People suffering from heart ailments should give adequate rest to the heart. Bringing down the pulse is of utmost importance, as the heart gets rest only between two successive beats.
Tadasana:
  • Stand straight.
  • Lift toes and stretch arms above the head till the point where the shoulder hurts and look up.
Virukshasana:
  • Stand on the left leg and place the heel of the right leg on the inner thigh joint.
  • Join the palms and lift them above the head with fingers pointing upwards upper arms should be paced behind the ears
  • Straighten the elbows.
  • Breathe normally.
  • Maintain the posture for 20 seconds.
For the BRAIN

The brain gets affected by tension and high blood pressure. Tension damages brain tissues. High blood pressure causes brain capillaries to become thin. This organ can be protected by doing asanas that increase blood supply to the brain.

Shirshasana
  • Sit in vajarasana.
  • Exhale and bend forward to place the forehead on the ground.
  • Lift hips up and roll head forward.
  • Breathe normally (gradually increase to twenty breaths )
  • Exhale and roll the head back while lowering the hips to the heels.
  • Inhale and lift your head ; sit up .
  • The asana is practiced only once for one minute .
For the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
One should remove extra mucous from the respiratory system to make it truly healthy.

NADI SHODANA PRANAYAMA
  • Hold up your right hand and fold your index and middle fingers towards your palm.Place your thumb next to the right nostril and your ring finger and middle finger by the left one. Close the right nostril by pressing gently against it with the thumb and inhale through the left nostril.
  • Close the left nostril by pressing gently against it with the ring and middle finger.Open the right nostril by relaxing the thumb and exhale fully .
  • Repeat alternate cycles five to ten times.

Healing trinity

  • It is 5000 years old but Ayurveda has not lost its significance. There are two primary reasons behind this. First, the concept of Ayurveda is based on harnessing the body's natural capacity to rejuvenate itself rather than depend on just external source of medicine. Second, Ayurveda prescribes medicines extracted from nature, like plants and herbs, which enhances trustworthiness.
  • The tenet of Ayurvedic medicine believes in the concept of three dosas called vata, pitta and kapha. In Ayurveda there are treatments for diseases as well as for health maintenance. For life style related disorders that are on the rise among urbanites, Ayurveda offers various traditional therapies. Life style disorders like weight and stress management, therapies for skin and digestive disorders to some chronic ailments like low back pain, high BP, cervical spondylosis, arthritis and sinusitis, Ayurveda treats them all through various detoxification procedure called panchakarma.
  • Apart from Ayurveda, Naturopathy too pampers the body with skin and body treatments. Body scrubs prepared with sea salt, coconut and papaya are excellent for removing dead skin. Honey, cucumber and chocolates are very good ingredients for wraps that cool refresh the body. To improve energy channels in the body, acupressure and acupuncture are very effective. Acupuncture involves totally painless insertion of a series of special needles along the body's energy paths to stimulate flow of energy.

Homeo healing

Since times immemorial man has always wanted to be in control of his life and is constantly endeavouring to conquer death. Although this seems to be still impossible, science and technology has come a long way in prolonging life both physically and pscycologically. Recent times has seen a paradigm shift from restorative medicine to prophylactic medicine with the focus on staying healthy. Also the term "being healthy" is now replaced by "being well" as the later signifies not just remaining free from diseases.
Centuries ago, even before the invention of the microscope and consequently, micro-organisms, homeopathy had postulated the multi-factorial origin of disese, where the environment, both external and internal, heredity, and a mixture of various other contributory factors, including possitive agents termed "miasma", were to blame. Homeopathy was foremost in recognising and defining health as a perfect dynamic equilibrium between the body, mind and soul. Modern medicine has only now accepted this truth and is therefore looking out for diverse methodologies to preserve health using vaccines, nutraceuticals, and the like. Constitutional homeopathic treatment, along with the right diet and regiment can help to cure any indisposition and keep diseases at bay.
While allopathic drugs are mostly synthetic and therefore foreign to the human body, herbal drugs being crude, tend to produce harmful effects due to their potent and toxic alkaloids. In either case, the patient's symptoms may improve but at the cost of the gentoms , vitality or the immune system further weakened. Homeopathic drugs, on the other hand, are absolutely safe by virtue of the dynamisation processes that serially dilute the drugs and render them harmless, whilst only stimulating the subtle healing energies from within the original substance. Homeopathic remedies do not act on a particular possitive organism or pathological process per se. They boost the body 's defense system so as to evoke a curative response.
The concept of customising the treatment protocol for each and every patient, which is gaining grounds these days, has also been the very foundation of homeopathic practice where individualisation is mandatory. Individualisation is not possible without a holistic and a 'wholistic' approach, i.e.,treating the patient as a whole, and not treating only a particular tissue, organ, or system. This is why a lot importance is given to the patient's mental makeup and uniqueness in manifesting an illness.Homeopathy heals naturally, safely, gently, and rapidly. Above all, it produces no adverse effects. The truth is that it produces desirable side-effects such as boosting the immunity to preserve health and replenishing the energy reserves of the body, leaving the person with a sense of well being. It goes without saying then that homeopathy, with its holistic approach, helps you to get well and stay well. Add to Mixx!

Saving lives

Life is uncertain. No matter how healthy you are, everything turns topsyturvy with a heart attack, burn, fracture or a venomous bite. Before taking the patient to a health centre intervention through first aid surely helps to minimise the risk. Here is a guideline as to provide the first aid in such situations.

HEART ATTACK
  • Symptoms:
  • Pain, discomfort or sqeezing at the centre of the chest.
  • Pain radiating to shoulders, neck, back, arms or jaws.
  • Stabbing chest pain.
  • Palpitation.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Nausea, vomiting or severe indigestion.
  • Sweating for no reason.
  • Dizziness or giddiness.
  • FIRST AID:
  • Make the victim lie down.
  • Call an emergency ambulance service.
  • Take an aspirin dissolved in water.
  • Place sorbitrate below the patient's tongue. Check whether the patient is breathing. If not provide artificial respiration. The procedure is : Tilt the head and lift the chin. Close nostrils by pinching them together. Take a deep breath and seal your mouth over the victim's. Breathe slowly into the person's mouth- It should take about 2secs to adequately inflate the chest. Do this twice. Check whether the victim's chest is rising as you breathe in. If there is resistance, hold the head further and try to lift the chin again.

BURNS
  • Mild burns can be treated with ointment or spray.
  • Cool the burnt area with running water for several minutes.
  • Never apply butter or oil in any burnOver the - counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be used on a mild burn.
  • Burns on the face and neck can sometimes swell to cause difficulty in breathing and restrict blood flow. In such a case, call ambulance immediatley.
  • While the burn is healing, wear loose natural clothing such as silk or light cotton. Get emergency medical help if the victim experiences dizziness, confusion, weakness, fever or chills, shivering or cold sweats.
CUTS
  • Minor cuts should be cleaned with water. Avoid soap.
  • Remove dirt or debris in the wound. Apply antibiotic ointment.
  • Dress the wound.
  • Change dressing daily.
  • Apply gentle pressure if bleeding persists.
  • Consult a doctor in case of delayed healing of wounds, pus discharge and fever.
Points to note:
  • Do not clean a major wound.
  • Do not remove deeply lodged debris.
  • Do not breathe on an open wound.
  • Do not push back exposed body parts.
FRACTURE
  • Find out how the accident occurred and the location of the injury.
  • Check the pulse. If pulse is not found on arms or legs, the injury requires immediate surgical care.
  • Lightly squeeze the fingers or toes near the injury if you are sure those digits are unaffected.Ask the victim what he feels.Loss of sensation is a sign of nerve or spinal damage. Waking up to the Vishu Kani

  • Vishu Kani is the begining of the new year for malayalees celebrated on 14th April every year. On this day viewing the Kani in the morning is considered auspicious. Friends and relatives join together in the traditional meal, the sadhya.
  • For malayalis, the new year is the time to usher in prosperity and Vishu kani, which is placed in the puja room the night before, is central to celebrations. The woman of the house places a large cucumber in rice in an uruli (a large brass vessel), with bananas, mangoes and other fruits and vegetables, the mundu (white and gold kerala dress), betel nut and a lamp placed around it. "The important things are gold and silver coins, konna poo (the golden yellow cassia fistula) and a mirror. Everything is in shades of golden yellow, which signifies prosperity for the year ahead."
  • The kani is arranged after every one goes to bed. "The eldest person wakes up every one in the household at dawn and covers their eyes and takes us to see the kani. It's supposed to be the first thing you see during the new year." The eldest in the family also give younger people money. "It can be as little as one rupee or much more." It's called Vishu Kaineetam."
  • Vishu falls on the first day of the malayalam month Medam, which runs from mid April to mid May. It's a time for family and freinds to get together for an elaborate lunch, the sadya, which includes avial, moru curry, ripe mango pullicherri, payasam and other traditional kerala dishes. "Cooking is easier now as you get ready-cut vegetables, grated coconut and coconut milk. Earlier, it took hours to cook a sadya."

Myths and misconceptions about Homeopathy.

Myths abound over Homeopathy and its efficacy. However, there is ongoing clinical research with respect to the use of homeopathy in treatment of various diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, asthma, atopic dermatitis etc... in different parts of the world.
Myth: Homeopaths use steroids. But the facts are

  • Homeopaths do not use steroids.
  • Steroids do not help in a large number of chronic diseases that are treated by homeopathy.
  • Also the long term use of steroids shows obvious side effects like weight gain, moon-face, obesity, weakening of bones and alter sugar metabolism.
  • Very often, test to check for the presence of steroids or done in local laboratories, which do not have the right testing instruments, leading to falsely positive results due to the fact that some homeopathic medicines derived from the plant kingdom have certain alkaloids that mimic steroids. The test is considered to be accurate only if done in FDA approved laboratories, by the TLC (thin layer chromatography) and the UV absorption methods.
Myth: Homeopathic medicines are placeboes. But the facts are:
  • The World Health Organisation has recognised homeopathy as an accepted system of medicine as the second largest system. There are innumerable double blind trials conducted where the efficiency of homeopathic medicines have been proved. Studies have shown the ability of homeopathic medicines to induce physiological changes in the body temperature.
  • Homeopathy works on animals in diseases like distemper and in infants even in acute diseases such as abdominal colic. This would not have been possible if homeopathic remedies were placeboes. Fifty percent of veterinary doctors in UK use homeopathy.
Myth: All homeopathic medicines look alike and hence must be the same. But the facts are
  • The basic ingredients of homeopathic medicines come from 3000 different sources that are mainly derived from plants and minerals. These can be preserved either in absolute alcohol or in distilled water. Alcohol is used because it acts as a longer term preservative. Also, being inert, it does not interact with the medicinal properties.
  • For palatability and longer shelf life, this liquid is poured into small globules made from cane sugar. These are highly porous and therefore absorb and retain the liquid homeopathic medicines for many months. Although they may look alike, every homeopathy remedy is different from the other.

Boy answered, "I'm too smart for the first-grade. My sister is in the third-grade and I'm smarter than she is! I think I should be in the third-grade too!"

Ms Neelam had enough. She took Boy. to the principal's office. While Boy. waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told Ms Neelam he would give the boy a test and if he failed to answer any of his questions he was to go back to the first-grade and behave. She agreed.

Boy. was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.

Principal: "What is 3 x 3?"
Boy.: "9".

Principal: "What is 6 x 6?"
Boy.: "36".

And so it went with every question the principal thought a third-grade should know. The principal looks at Ms Neelam and tells her, "I think Boy can go to the third-grade. "

Ms Neelam says to the principal, "I have some of my own questions.

Can I ask him ?" The principal and Boy both agreed.

Ms Neelam asks, "What does a cow have four of that I have only two of?

Boy.: Shake hands

Ms Neelam: Now I will ask some "Who am I" sort of questions, okay?
Boy.: Yep.

Ms Neelam: You stick your poles inside me. You tie me down to get me up. I get wet before you do.
Boy.: Tent

Ms Neelam: A finger goes in me. You fiddle with me when you're bored. The best man always has me first. The Principal was looking restless, a bit tense and took one large Patiala Vodka peg.
Boy.: Wedding Ring

Ms Neelam: I come in many sizes. When I'm not well, I drip. When you blow me, you feel good.

Stay cool this summer

Scorching summer is nothing new for us. Now when the skin feels like melting some action is required from us. Here are a few tips to beat the sun.
DIET MATTERS:

  • Include cereals, rice, wheat and vegetables in your menu. Eat moderately as stomach disorders are high during hot months.
  • Consume foods with high water content such as watermelons, cucumber, oranges, carrots and spinach.
  • Drink as much water as you can.
  • Have lot of coconut water, butter milk and lemon juice minus the sugar. This will help to balance the water level of the body.
AVOID:
  • Food with unrequired fat and sodium content. Sodium causes water retention, further dehydrating the body.
  • Salty peanuts, chips and oily stuff are bad too.
KIDDIES:
  • If your kids complain of loss of appetite give them compact meals, stuffed parathas, vegetables wrapped in chappatis, curd rice or raita khichdi.
  • Give them lots of coconut water, lemon juice or mixed fruit juice.
SKIN CARE:
A line of infections and diseases that your skin is likely to suffer from...
  • Prickly heat: An itchy infection mainly caused due to blockage of sweat glands. Combat this by taking a shower twice a day.
  • Fungal skin infections: caused due to excessive perspiration and lack of air circulation. Avoid closed shoes, synthetic fabric and tight clothes.
  • Sun burns: Over exposure to the sun can make your skin tanned and burnt. The result is black skin patches that peel off. Moisture this area - Do not pull the peeling skin. General hygiene and skin care can go a long way in avoiding these.
  • Shower immediately after exercise.
  • Wear open shoes to allow air circulation.
  • Always wear a sun block lotion.
SICK OF SUMMER:
Summer ailments are mostly caused by poor hygiene, water infection and dehydration. The common ones are:
  • Gastroenteritis: Common among those who rely on precooked meals. During summer, the food tends to spoil faster than in other seasons. If consumed, it leads to vomitting, food poisoning etc... The solution is have freshly cooked meals and boiled water and closed fruits like oranges, bananas, sweet limes.
  • Summer coughs and cold: Fluctuating temperatures between the heat on the street and your AC office results in coughs and cold. Excessive consumption of iced water and cold foods are also the causes. The remedy is maintain your AC temperature between 20 and 25 degrees. Consume less cold foods and beverages.
  • Dehydration: Over exposure to the sun takes away essential hydration from the body which then needs to be replenished with water. Giddiness, head aches, fainting and fever are some of its symptoms. The solution is to have liquids regularly during the day and wear a cap while out in the sun.

Tips for retirement savings.

  • If we live longer, we will either end up leaving our careers or opt for a less intensive job or stop working. The companies included pension plans in their compensation package and employees used to receive a percentage of their salary as pension for the rest of their life. This social security benefit used to be enough to offset the cost of living so that a retired person could enjoy his retirement without any financial hardship. But with the high inflationary trends in the current days this does not hold to be true anymore.
  • Instead, it is today the individual responsibility to create for him or herself a financially comfortable retired life. How to go about it?
  • Make a plan for retirement. Saving for retirement canfigure out to be little difficult at first.
  • Decide what you need to do to create a large nest of money which can take of your retirement needs.
  • Determine your net worth ie the value of assets minus the value of your liabilities. If the net worth is negative start figuring out as to what you can do to make it possitive.
  • First decide what you will need to contribute today to reach your retirement goal.
  • Next you need to create a budget of your recurring expenses and consider your saving contribution as a monthly expense.
  • Compare the various plans available in the market. Do undertake a cost benefit analysis before deciding the plan.
  • Select the right plan and start investing regularly for financial freedom during your retired life.

When the saints came marching in Mylapore during the Arupathimoovar festival.

  • I was one among the thousands to witness the procession of the Nayanmars (Saivite Saints) along with the idolx of Kapaleeswarar and Karpagambal, richly decorated amidst chanting of vedic mantras and the nadaswaram, on the occassion of th Panguni uttiram festival, at Chittiraikulam, Mylapore, Chennai, India. I became pious and happy and my heart was filled with peace.
  • During the Aarupathimoovar festival held every year during March - April the bronze idols of 63 Nayanmars are carried in a procession of palanquins around the Kapaleeswarar temple.
  • Baloons, hand made coconut shell violins, silk sarees, cotton sarees, fresh flowers and huge rangolis before the houses speak loudly of this annual festival. I always take an off from my work during this festival not just for religious reasons but I get the joy of being one among the crowd of devotees.
  • Devotees and tourists had queued up at the 4 mada streets on the Arupathimoovar festival the 8th day of the 10 day long Brahmotsavam celebrations.
  • When the poles are sunk, the pandals are put up and packets of pongal, pulliyodharai and glasses of neer more are distributed to the passersby all free like an Akshayapatra, a legendary vessel which never becomes empty. All these are prepared at the kitchens of the Kapaleeswara temple and the surrounding houses clearly bringing out the existence of community kitchens.
After the Nayanmar festival on the full moon day the devotees can witness the marriage of Kapaleeswarar and Karpagambal (Thirukalyanam). The darshan of Lord Kapaleeswara and Karpagambal is a divine experience that bestows mental peace, satisfaction and happiness on the devotees. Add to Mixx!

Handling emotions

Know that humiliation does not weaken you, it strengthens you. If you are afraid of humiliation, you can neither make progress in your material life nor in your spiritual life. When you stand above humiliation, you get closer to the self, to god. So, the way out is:

  • Get humiliated!
  • Be child-like.
  • Get steeped in love with the divine.
  • Total commitment to truth.
  • Know that the people you are jealous of have done some good karma in the past and they are now reaping the fruit.
  • Take it as an inspiration to gain merit now.
  • Create a sense of belongingness with them.
  • Think of all that you have, that they don't have and feel greatful.
  • Simply observe the sensations.
  • Join hands and form a team.
  • Realise that with the passage of time, all will perish.

Is it worth to do all the house repairs ourselves?

  • Whenever there is a repair work to be carried out in my house, a number of arguments arise between me and my wife which sometime ends up in small tussles. The reason is only that I am a miser as regards paying the proffessionals where as my wife is totally of a different view. According to her one cannot be master of everything.
  • As a DIY (Do it Yourself) enthusiast I use to follow the step by step instructions provided on the various sites on the internet and proceed to perform the repairs myself.
I am sharing the modest experience as a DIY enthusiast:
  • One fine morning, the water line had a crack and the water started flowing all around. As usual I started attending it. As the plumbing was concealed without knowing I had broken the walls to a large extent and ended up spending more on cement and paint.
  • Similarly I had a bitter experience in trying to paint the house, trying to the electrical wiring, trying to repair the hot water system as all these got messed up and I ended up spending more.
All these experiences had thought me a lesson that one cannot be master of everything. I realised that I had been pennywise and pound foolish. It is all right as regards minor repairs where as trying to do the major repairs with a view to save will result in only in messing up the things, creating a chaos and more expenditure. Add to Mixx!

How to sleep better?

  • Sleep is a vital part of life and its lack can have severe consequences.
  • If one suffers from insomnia or other sleep disorders, the first thing to do is to consult the doctor.
Causes:

  • Pain due to medical illness or injury.
  • Working in night shifts or long shifts.
  • Side effect of certain medications.
  • Overuce of caffeine and alcohol.
  • Extreme noise, temperature or a change in perxon's surroundings.
Bulleted ListTips to have a good sleep:
  • Have a bath in warm water before going to bed as this relaxes the muscles to a great extent.
  • Listen to mild music as this surely relieves stress to a great extent.
  • Drink a glass of milk before bed time as it soothes the nervous system.
  • Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol and Tobacco.
  • Sleep in a well ventilated room.
  • Sleep on a good firm bed.
  • Sleep on your back.

  • Go to bed early in the night and get up early in the morning.
  • Avoid naps in the afternoon.
  • Avoid illuminations in the bed room.
  • Pray the almighty both before going to bed and after getting up for a few seconds. This provides a great relief, stress, tension and worries. Just do your duty and do not worry about the results and leave it to the Lord. When we do not worry about results, there will be no reason for worry, stress, anxiety, anger, hatred, likes, dislikes or sorrows. As a result the mind and the body both will rest in peace.

The Epics of Ramayana

  • The literary work depicting the heroism of Rama. But for the spiritual minded it is an epic depicting deep spirituality for their life line.As the incarnations are both human and divine an overall view would just show the literary meaning and the heroism of Rama and shall be another fiction. But for a person with insight , the spiritualism deep rooted into the epic Ramayana Rama as the hero inculating us with the spiritual ways of life shall be visible. No doubt both are right in their places.
  • The sages like Valmiki and Vysa have achieved deep spiritual vision with which they could see the spirituality and the divinism involved in the Ramayana.
  • The intension of the sages is not to teach history or geography but to impress upon the man's history of divine existence and the spiritual destiny of man.
  • The Bhagvatta Purana after giving a long narration of the devotee kings, finally says that it has narrated the stories of all those men whose souls have departed leaving their memories.
  • So don't look for historical authencity or factual accuracy for the epics like Ramayana and Mahabharatha as they are narratives and stories of men with spiritual insight who could see far deeper.
  • The Sundara Kanda as also the whole of Ramayana has got both its spiritual and literary aspects . This chapter of Ramayana shows Valmiki's literary & poetic excellence and hence known as Sundara or beautiful . Another view can be it relieves Sita of her sorrow & hence Sundara . It can also mean a messenger & the Kanda includes the message sent by Rama to Sita . Sundara is also a name of an intermediary who establishes a mutual contact between a hero and a heroine as Hanuman did in the case of Lord Rama and Sita.
  • The recovery of something lost is also described as Sundara . In Ramayana the topic dealt with the discovery of the abducted Sita . The study of the Sundara Kanda is considerd equivalent to the study of the whole of Ramayana as far as the spiritual merit is concerned .Just as the Upanishads are said to contain the supreme purport of the vedas ,the Sundara Kanda is supposed to be the heart of Ramayana.
