- America's statue of Liberty will be opened to the public from July 4 announced Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
- The statue, whose crown was shuttered by the Bush administration after 9/11 will be reopened to the public again.
- The planned reopening followed a long security review that will lead to some safety fixes, including new, higher handrails for the winding, 168-step staircase.
- Only three parties of 10 will be allowed inside at once: one climbing up, one down and one in the crown, with each escorted by a National Park Service ranger.
- Eager visitors shouldn't delay - after the initial two-year opening, the crown will be closed again for a more extensive safety overhaul that could keep visitors out of the statue for another 24 months, starting in 2011.The Bush administration shut the statue after the Sept. 11 attacks, citing security concerns. Liberty's base, pedestal and observation deck were reopened in August 2004, but the crown remained closed - the only site in the National Park system off-limits since 9/11.
- Even an invitation was extended to Obama to become the first person up the steps on July 4.He's a tall guy and he may have to bend over as he goes up that double helix stairwell.
