- Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 26, 1910.At the age of 18 , she joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta.She was deeply moved by the sufferings of the poor and the downtrodden people in the slums of Calcutta and started working for their upliftment.
- Mother Teresa commenced "The Missionaries of Charity" to take care of the destitutes.
- Today this organization has widely expanded worldwide including the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries.
- The "The Missionaries of Charity" provide effective help to the poor people, undertake relief work during natural calamities and they take care of the shut-ins, alcoholics, homeless, and AIDS sufferers.
- Mother Teresa's work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). She also received the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards.
- Mother Teresa was also awarded the Noble prize for peace in 1979.
